Classic Car Paintings

Classic Car Paintings series has launched!

Classic Car Paintings by Elaine Brady Smith Art

Photos from Hershey Antique Auto Show

I had been thinking about this series for a while. The photo references were shot over three years ago at the Hershey Antique Auto Show in 2013 (albeit one shot this year in Mt Gretna, PA). Every once in a while I’d browse and ponder what to do with these photos. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to paint them in oils on wood panels. Working a bit larger has also been a good challenge for me and yes…I’m ready to go much larger! There’s another series brewing in my head already!

12 Cars Planned for Series

The photos were cropped and modified until I could “see them in paint” as I do with most of my subject matter and a total of 12 cars are planned for this series. Shown are the first 5 cars completed…yay!!!. They have been a labor of love. Initially I intended them to be more painterly, but alas, I am a slave for details…but quite happy with the results!!!

Spectacular Chrome

Why cars?…many people ask when they walk into my studio. “I like shiny” is mostly my reply, but I have come to appreciate the classic cars much more for their superior design and spectacular chrome…much of which has been a real challenge to paint. To think that these cars were all created pre-computer is absolutely amazing to me! Painting the cars has given me an appreciation for the uniqueness of each model. These babies will never again be repeated in car design history!!!

A Girl Who Paints Cars

And yes…I feel pretty cool being a Girl Who Paints Cars!!! Many are surprised when they walk around to my easel and find out what I am painting.  I like that aspect, as I never felt the need for shock value in my art…so I suppose this is my shocker!!!

December Featured Artist at Millworks

4 Cups collage

I’m a December Featured Artist at Millworks, 340 Verbeke St, Harrisburg PA 17102.  I’m happy to be showing new work, including the Torn Paper Collage Coffee series above. My exhibit is located in the Small Gallery just behind the sales gallery and is installed and ready for viewing!!! You can visit my exhibit anytime during gallery hours Tues-Sun 11am-10pm.

I’m so excited about my new work in collage and in oils. My oil paintings are small daily still life studies focusing on single objects to capture the quietness of life. Torn Paper Collage isn’t new for me, but taking it to realism is definitely new! The collages are layered with a large variety of papers, many of them transparent, creating a rich history and depth in each piece. I’ve been enjoying working in both mediums this past year.

Third in the Burg

Third in the Burg is Dec 18, 4-10pm and I’ll be in the Small Gallery on that night. Come visit!!! Join me and my fellow featured artists.  I’d love to see you! And if you can’t make it that night, let me know if you’d like to visit another time during the month. I’ll be in the studio various hours during the month.

It’s About Time

Elaine Brady Smith

I thought it was about time I write a blog post! I haven’t sat down to write one for quite a while now and it has been nagging at my brain. So here I am, breaking the ice with a post just to get me back into the swing of things. Not that I lack something to say…by no means…there is a lot to say!

We have settled into a new life at The Millworks, 340 Verbeke St, Studio 104, Harrisburg, PA 17102 since December 1, 2014. Joan Maguire and Christine Goldbeck and I are sharing the space and we are loving it!!! The Millworks officially opened on March 12, 2015 and we haven’t had time to look back since. Patrons of the arts and all walks of life have been flocking in to see the artist studios, sample the excellent homemade sustainable menu and have a nice cold craft beer.

If you come, the best time to visit the studios is First Saturday of every month, 10am-10pm, and Third in the Burg, 4pm-10pm (third Friday of the month). Other times are hit or miss to see the artists, as they come and go as their schedules permit.

As for myself, I try to be in the studio working at least 5-6 days per week. I am fortunate to be there during the day, and I am in most Saturdays too. I am finding my way back to being a still life oil painter recently. I’ll keep the mixed media and encaustic in the home studio for now. But I am having a great time working on my small series of still life oils. It’s been a wonderful fresh start for me and I feel content and happy!

I hope to see you at The Millworks soon!!!
