Recent New Works

Something From Nothing by Elaine Brady Smith

Something From Nothing by Elaine Brady Smith, 12″ x 12″ Encaustic collage on board

I’ve recently been doing a few experimental pieces with collage and encaustic. While many encaustic artists vie for texture and relief in their work and I admire these techniques a great deal; I,  on the other hand am obsessed with  how flat and smooth I can go and what techniques I can use to apply minimal wax when attaching collage papers to my piece. It has been a challenge and I am beginning to find satisfaction in my process.

While there is much beauty in the wax itself when applied to artwork, I have always been disappointed with the clouding and dulling of collage materials with wax. I have found some interesting ways to apply the waxed papers, and then remove most of the wax to preserve the true nature and colors of the original papers themselves.

Here are two recent works utilizing my new process. If you are interested in learning this process, I will be instructing a one day workshop at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen Center of American Craft, Lancaster, PA on June 22, 2013 from 10am-5pm.
