Recent New Works

Something From Nothing by Elaine Brady Smith

Something From Nothing by Elaine Brady Smith, 12″ x 12″ Encaustic collage on board

I’ve recently been doing a few experimental pieces with collage and encaustic. While many encaustic artists vie for texture and relief in their work and I admire these techniques a great deal; I,  on the other hand am obsessed with  how flat and smooth I can go and what techniques I can use to apply minimal wax when attaching collage papers to my piece. It has been a challenge and I am beginning to find satisfaction in my process.

While there is much beauty in the wax itself when applied to artwork, I have always been disappointed with the clouding and dulling of collage materials with wax. I have found some interesting ways to apply the waxed papers, and then remove most of the wax to preserve the true nature and colors of the original papers themselves.

Here are two recent works utilizing my new process. If you are interested in learning this process, I will be instructing a one day workshop at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen Center of American Craft, Lancaster, PA on June 22, 2013 from 10am-5pm.

A Day of Encaustic and Collage

Encaustic and Collage Workshop at PA Guild

Combine hot wax and 10 women and what do you get? A great day at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen!!! We had a great time playing with paper and wax, trying out different techniques for encasutic collage. The workshop was held at the PA Guild store on Queen St in the heart of Lancaster, PA. This same workshop will be offered again in June at the same location, so come on out and play!!!

Art School Annual Exhibition

The Art Association of Harrisburg‘s Art School Annual Exhibition opened Friday, June 29 in downtown Harrisburg. As an instructor, I was able to enter two of my own pieces of art. To my surprise, I won a 3rd place award for “Skyline View“, a collage I did as a demo in the Winter Session at AAH. You can view the collage in the photo below (the one on the right).

I always encourage my students to enter this show. It is a great opportunity for emerging artists to begin to show their work. One of my students, Mary Kandray Gelenser won a 2nd Place in the Mixed Media category. Christine Goldbeck also entered two great collages that she completed in my class. So I am beaming with pride!!!

The exhibit runs through July 19, 2012. For more information about events and classes at Art Association of Harrisburg call 717-236-1432

Encaustic on Paper

“High Tide” 8″ x 8″ Encaustic on paper by Elaine Brady Smith

This past weekend, I took an Advanced Encaustic workshop with Linda Benton McCloskey at her home studio. We did encaustic monotypes and encaustic on paper and I think I have found a NEW love in encaustic…AGAIN!

Encaustic Monotypes and encaustic on paper is just wonderful to create. I love the melty feel of the wax on the paper. Then playing into them with stencils, stamps, art crayons, charcoal and pencil…Wow is all I can say. Loved it and can’t wait until my anodized aluminum plate arrives from The Fine Art Store so I can play some more!!!
