Collage and Encaustic Classes for Fall

I have two classes starting in September. The first is my regular Thursday night Collage Class at Art Association of Harrisburg that will begin September 13. This class runs 10 weeks…and yes that seems like a long time, but I have so much information packed into this class…the time flies by quickly!!!

The Collage Class is geared for all levels of expertise from beginner to advanced. We will cover the basics of how to construct a collage, utilizing the elements and principles of design. We will cover a multitude of techniques that apply not only collage, but mixed media art as well. We will also take ordinary papers (junk mail, newspaper, etc) and turn them into beautiful painted, printed, stamped, and stenciled papers that you can use in collage or mixed media art. This class is packed full of valuable information!!! Cost: $110. A supply list will be provided. Contact Art Association of Harrisburg for registration.

I am also offering a One Day – Working with Wax – Intro to Encaustic on September 22 through the PA Guild of Craftsmen at Pennsylvania Guild Center of American Craft, Lancaster. This workshop will be held from 9am – 4pm. We will cover how to make your own medium, substrates, fusing methods and tools. There will be demonstrations on various techniques such as: applying color, making marks with tools, incising lines, imbedding objects, adding collage and transfers. Students have the opportunity to explore the techniques after each demo and take home their own encaustic art piece. Cost: Members – $76; Non-Members – $85.

Supply List:

  • 25’ roll of Heavy Duty Tin Foil
  • 1-roll of Viva paper towels
  • 4-6 single edged razor blades

Art School Annual Exhibition

The Art Association of Harrisburg‘s Art School Annual Exhibition opened Friday, June 29 in downtown Harrisburg. As an instructor, I was able to enter two of my own pieces of art. To my surprise, I won a 3rd place award for “Skyline View“, a collage I did as a demo in the Winter Session at AAH. You can view the collage in the photo below (the one on the right).

I always encourage my students to enter this show. It is a great opportunity for emerging artists to begin to show their work. One of my students, Mary Kandray Gelenser won a 2nd Place in the Mixed Media category. Christine Goldbeck also entered two great collages that she completed in my class. So I am beaming with pride!!!

The exhibit runs through July 19, 2012. For more information about events and classes at Art Association of Harrisburg call 717-236-1432
